Slough and Eton have a school newsletter. It's name is Synergy, and it comes out
every week. It's a good newsletter and you should try and get hold of it.
In this unit you are going to create a newsletter for your
friends and to your parents. The
first newsletter will be written for new students at Slough and Eton. The second will be
aimed at the parents of these pupils.
Each newsletter will have
at least two sides and the members of your news team will have responsibility for at least one part of the paper.
In order to complete this unit you will
-
Work in groups of four with each member having responsibility for at least two parts of the paper. The newspaper will have two sides.
-
Include appropriate images that have been collected/prepared from a variety of sources.
-
Include content that is up to date and reflect the interests of the chosen audience.

Task 1 Identify the House
Style of a newsletter
Just as there are conventions about how we spell, punctuate, or lay out a
brochure or letter, so there are established conventions about how the front page of a daily newspaper is presented.
These conventions include:
- the font and style of the masthead
- the use and impact of headlines
- the placement of the lead story
- the acknowledgment of reporters' names (known as bylines) and of other sources, along with the dateline;
- the use of photos with their explanatory captions
- the use of diagrams, tables, and other info graphics, which summarise information into visual
form
- the use of columns, boxes, stories going across the page
- the variety in presentation of type, including reversed type of white on black; the use of space, including white space, and other aspects of layout and
presentation.
Take a look at our Synergy newspaper and identify the Synergy house
style.
Remember, you have been asked to create two newsletters, one for new pupils
at Slough and Eton and another for parents of pupils at Slough and Eton. So
before you begin writing decide on the audience
- What are the needs of the audience
- What does this audience want the news letter to look like
You've identified your team, you now know what your responsibilities are and now
you have decided on your audience. Now its time to get down and create the
newsletter template.
This task you will show your two newsletters to the class and read their
newsletters. You will also evaluate your own newsletters, using the Project
Evaluation Generator. For more details about each category in the PEG,
put your mouse over the field headings and a pup up box will offer more details.
This
project evaluation page is to be handed in with your work and you
will need to write an introduction to your work, make some general comments
about it and write an evaluation on it. You will get a mark for using each of the words below correctly.
